Goodwill Salute at St. Dominic Hospital

Mary Helen Bowen, Assistant Vice President, Pharmacy at St. Dominic Hospital, will be honored Thursday, August 19, at the Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services (GIVS) 2010 Volunteer Salute Dinner for demonstrating unique and notable levels of volunteerism in the community.

The dinner, which will be held at the Country Club of Jackson at 7:15 p.m., is a significant fundraiser for Goodwill Industries, making it possible for Goodwill to serve the community for the last 52 years. The dinner will be followed by a presentation of the honorees 8 p.m.

Mary Helen devotes much time and energy to worthy causes in the Jackson area despite her demanding career as a pharmacist at St. Dominic Hospital and being a member of the Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Mary Helen is highly involved with Goodwill Industries, serving as the board Vice Chairman, GIVS Immediate Past President and a past Salute Dinner Chairman.

Mary Helen volunteers for an array of organizations, showing her love of people, animals, the arts and the community. She serves on the boards of Ballet Mississippi and the Mississippi Chorus and has served as President of Friends of the International Ballet Competition. She is a member of Galloway United Methodist Church, where she has ministered as a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer on the Salt and Light Committee. She also actively supports the Jackson Zoo and has served along with her husband as co-chairman of the Zoo Party event and also served as a Cub Scout leader.

"I was inspired to volunteer because I have a desire to just not live in the community or to just be a member of an organization, but to really be a part of it and provide support through volunteering," Mary Helen said. "I have received so much more than I have given from volunteering."

GIVS is the fundraising and support auxiliary of Goodwill. GIVS volunteers help to raise funds to address specific needs, such as funds for certain capital needs from delivery trucks, forklifts and office equipment to scholarships for job training courses, medical exams for employees and special celebrations at holidays and birthdays.

Annually, a number of persons are nominated from which the honorees are chosen and recognized with a premier dinner in their honor.
