St. Dominic's Ranked in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals"
(August 10, 2012, Jackson, Miss.) For the second consecutive year, St. Dominic's has been ranked the No. 1 hospital in the Jackson metro area in the U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings, available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals. St. Dominic's shares the No. 1 ranking with University of Mississippi Medical Center. St. Dominic’s also ranked as “high-performing” in the specialties of neurology/neurosurgery and urology.
U.S. News also recognized St. Dominic’s as one of the “Most Connected” hospitals in the country. St. Dominic’s is the only hospital in Mississippi —and one of only 156 hospitals in the nation — to receive the prestigious designation, which identifies high performing hospitals that achieve top grades for electronic medical record adoption and qualify for the Federal government’s meaningful use standards.
The rankings, published annually by U.S. News for the past 23 years, is also featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook.
The latest rankings showcase more than 720 out of 5,000 hospitals nationwide. Fewer than 150 hospitals are nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties, and the remaining recognized hospitals met a standard of performance nearly as demanding in one or more specialties.
“St. Dominic's is proud to be ranked as one of U.S. News & World Report's 'Best Hospitals' for the second year in a row," said Lester K. Diamond, President of St. Dominic Hospital. “The greater Jackson area is fortunate to have several quality hospitals, allowing Jackson to serve as a destination point for those seeking healthcare throughout the state.”
“The hospital’s leadership and medical staff will continue its commitment to providing high quality patient care, excellent medical outcomes and compassionate care, which is reflected in this award," Diamond said.
The core mission of Best Hospitals is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. "All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care," Comarow said. "They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases."
Covering 94 metro areas in the U.S., the regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of the nationally ranked institutions.
Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties—death rates, patient safety, procedure
volume, and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.
The rankings cover 16 medical specialties and all 94 metro areas that have at least 500,000 residents and at least one hospital that performed well enough to be ranked.
