St. Dominic's to Provide Nurses for Madison County Schools

St. Dominic Community Health Services has accepted a proposal by the Madison County School District to provide school nurses for its nine elementary and 5 middle schools beginning with the 2008-2009 school year.  The school nurse program is planned as an extension of St. Dominic’s Care-A-Van outreach ministry, which already offers a number of free health screenings and education programs to children and senior adults in Madison County.

“Since the beginning of our ministry in Central Mississippi, education and healthcare have always been the impetus of St. Dominic’s mission,” said St. Dominic Health Services President Sister Mary Dorothea.  “The health of today’s children will greatly impact the overall health status of the future, and building strong relationships between our schools and healthcare providers can only serve to create a healthier community for tomorrow,” she added.

According to Deidra Bell, CFO for St. Dominic Health Services, the school nurse ministry will operate as a pilot program and will be evaluated to determine future funding and expansion possibilities.  St. Dominic’s will provide this school nurse program at no cost to the Madison County School District.

“St. Dominic’s is committed to expanding its services and offering more community benefit programs to meet the health needs of those around us,” says Bell.  “We are pleased to be able to partner with Madison County.  The more emphasis we put on health prevention and wellness now, the greater impact we have for the future,” she added.
