Childbirth Education & Prenatal Classes

St. Dominic's wants to make sure that you and the other members of your family are ready for the arrival of your new baby.  We put a special emphasis on education classes so that you feel prepared to handle the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth plus those that come from caring for a newborn.  Our classes include everything from fitness for mom and breastfeeding to infant CPR and a car seat safety check.

Classes For Expecting Families

Moms N Motion - The Club at St. Dominic's offers a structured water fitness class that helps maintain cardio respiratory and muscular fitness throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. Must be at least 12 weeks into pregnancy and have a signed medical release from a physician. Call (601) 200-4925 for details. Cost: $64/month or free for mothers delivering at St. Dominic's.

Breastfeeding Class - This class includes the advantages of breastfeeding for mother and baby, prenatal preparation, keys to successful breastfeeding and expressing and storing breast milk.

Infant CPR - A one-session class that teaches injury prevention and correct CPR techniques for a new infant.  Held twice a month at St. Dominic's.  Call (601) 200-6934.  Free.

Infant Seat Safety Check - Certified technicians from Mississippi Safe Kids will be at St. Dominic's to show parents how to properly install their child's car seat. Call (601) 200-6934 for more information. Free.

Brothers and Sisters-To-Be - St. Dominic's will offer a special class for children ages 3-8 who are expecting a new baby in their family. Emphasis is given to the sibling's new role as a big brother or big sister. Call (601) 200-6934 for details or to register. Free.

Fatherwise - A one-night class for expectant or new fathers which offers personal, first-hand tips from a new dad and advice on how to help mom. Call (601) 200-6934 to register. Free.

Baby Basics - St. Dominic's teaches parents basic infant care and common parental concerns of the first few months. This course is now being taught by a pediatrician. Call (601) 200-6934. Free.

Prepared Childbirth Class - St. Dominic's offers a class that covers everything you need to know before, during and after your baby's birth. Weekend and Tuesday evening classes available. Registration required. Call (601) 200-6934 to register. Cost: $50 per couple.

eLearning Childbirth Class - As an alternative for parents who cannot attend our conventional prepared childbirth class due to bed rest, scheduling conflicts or time constraints we offer an interactive, web-based program that includes animated illustrations, videos, voice-overs and interactive games.  It can be viewed on a PC or Mac.  High speed Internet is advised but dial-up will work, it may just take a while for the download to complete.  After registering for this class you will receive a code to enter the eLearning program.  The code will be good for 84 days starting from the time you first log-on.  Once you receive your code visit http://www.giftofmotherhood.com/redirect/ to begin your class.  Contact (601) 200-6934 to register.  Cost:  $50, cash or check only.

"Grand" Parents Class - This class for expecting or new grandparents is designed as an update on childbirth and parenting practices. Call (601) 200-6934 to register. Free.

Signing with Tots Class - This class is for parents and babies from birth through 3 years of age. The class includes a 4-week session and book to use at home.  Each week in the 4-week session is devoted to a unique topic in baby's life:

  • Mealtime
  • Bedtime
  • Safety and Health
  • Animals and Playtime

Sign language is an effective way for babies and caregivers to communicate before babies learn to talk.  The benefits for baby are intellectual as well as emotional.
