Door to Balloon Time

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, and an estimated 790,000 Americans experience a heart attack each year. Fortunately, advances in emergency care for heart attack victims have helped improve patient outcomes, reducing the number of deaths each year. One of these improvements is called “door-to-balloon time”, the median time from emergency room arrival to a patient receiving a balloon or stent in the catheterization lab. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recommend patients undergo percutaneous coronary intervention within 90 minutes of entering the hospital, if not less. This procedure that opens up blocked arteries with a small inflatable balloon is most effective within this time frame before permanent damage has occurred to the body.

Why is Door to Balloon Time Important?

St. Dominic’s averages far below the standard goal of 90 minutes for door to balloon time for severe heart attacks. With every minute during a heart attack, heart muscle is dying because there is a blockage in the artery supplying its oxygen. Our streamlined team approach increases a patient’s chance of survival and minimizes long term damage to the heart.
