Explanation of Safe Harbor
What groups are considered to be a St. Dominic’s affiliate?
St. Dominic’s currently has two affiliates that employ or contract
physicians. These include St. Dominic’s Medical Associates and The MEA
Clinics.
What does ‘actively practicing’ mean?
Physicians who are actively practicing at St. Dominic’s are on the active
medical staff and have provided care to at least 12 patients at St.
Dominic’s during the past 12 months. Physicians who have joined the medical
staff at St. Dominic’s within the past 12 months are also included
regardless of their current patient contacts.
What is considered to be a patient contact?
Patient contacts include inpatient or observation patient admissions,
consultations, and same day surgeries.
Why 12 patient contacts?
St. Dominic’s has determined that a minimum of 12 patient contacts annually
is needed in order to monitor physician quality and performance.
What if there are no physicians in a particular specialty with more than 12
patient contacts?
Some specialties are strictly outpatient practices. If no physician in a
particular specialty has more than 12 patient contacts all physicians in
that specialty who are on the medical staff and hold clinical privileges at
St. Dominic’s are included. If the low volume specialty includes physicians
who are employed by or contracted with a St. Dominic’s affiliate then only
the employed and/or contracted physicians are included.
What specialties are not included?
Specialties such as Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine,
Neonatology, Pathology, Radiation Oncology, and Radiology are not included
because they are hospital based ancillary services. Contact information for
any St. Dominic physicians in these specialties can be found online at www.stdom.com by clicking on ‘Find
a Doctor’.
