(November 3, 2016, Jackson, Miss.) The American Diabetes Association honored St. Dominic’s with an Education Recognition Certificate for its diabetes self-management outpatient education program. ADA believes this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.
The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for diabetes self-management. These Standards were first developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and since then have been revised by the diabetes community.
Programs apply for recognition voluntarily. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and awarded for four years.
“Diabetes education and training have been proven to be key predictors of positive health outcomes for diabetics,” said Shelley Gaggini, St. Dominic’s diabetes program educator. “Patients who are willing to move toward disease acceptance and place value on being educated in disease self-management will be encouraged when they learn the basics of diabetes care can improve quality of life. As educators, our goal is to teach but also to provide support and encouragement for patients living with this disease.”
