(April 18, 2017,  Jackson, Miss.) According to the spring 2017 Leapfrog Group survey, St. Dominic Hospital has earned an “A” rating for the second survey in a row. St. Dominic’s was one of 823 hospitals nationwide and 13 in Mississippi to receive an “A” rating for its commitment to reducing errors, infections and accidents that can harm patients. A 2012 Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality Johns Hopkins Medicine report showed that if all “B”, “C”, “D” and “F” hospitals performed the same as “A” hospitals, 33,459 lives could be saved every year.

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures, of both voluntarily and publicly reported hospital safety data to assign “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and “F”  grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. Grades are calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. The Hospital Safety Score now includes five measures of patient-reported experience with the hospital as well as two of the most common infections, C.diff and MRSA. In the interest of patient safety and transparency, St. Dominic’s made the decision to begin voluntarily reporting all data elements to the Leapfrog Group survey in December of 2015.  For more information on these scores and the scoring methodology, please visit www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization focused on improving the quality and safety of American health care.
