(December 17, 2018, Jackson, Miss.) St. Dominic’s Joint Center is making spirits bright for six individuals this holiday season by providing them total joint replacements at no cost through Operation Walk USA. These life-changing surgeries restore mobility and provide pain relief for patients who otherwise may not be able to afford treatment.
Orthopedic surgeons Jeff Kennedy, MD, and Matthew Futvoye, MD, performed two knee and four hip replacements for six deserving patients who either did not qualify for government health coverage, did not have insurance or were not able to afford surgery on their own. The program provides every element of treatment – surgery, hospitalization, and pre-and post-operative care – at no cost to patients.
In addition to physicians Kennedy and Futvoye, St. Dominic’s Operation Walk USA team also includes Physician Anesthesia Group, Lakeland Radiology, St Dominic’s Medical Group, Sta-Home and Kindred at Home health services. In addition, total joint implant companies Depuy, Zimmer and TJO donated implants to these patients. “It takes a team effort to provide patients the care and services they need to have a successful outcome,” said Cris Bourn, St. Dominic’s Orthopedic Administrator.
After performing international medical mission work for several years in third-world countries, Dr. Kennedy made the decision to bring this mission to St. Dominic’s with Operation Walk USA in 2012. Since that time, St. Dominic’s has provided approximately 25 free joint replacements as part of the program. “I realized there were many American’s that suffer daily because they are unable to afford a joint replacement surgery,” Dr. Kennedy said. “It was important to bring this type of mission to Mississippi.”
Dr. Futvoye said he is proud to be a able to participate Operation Walk USA. “I am glad to be a part of this life-changing program for our patients,” he said. “It is rewarding to know we have helped someone who really needed our services.”
During the month of December, an estimated 30 patients will receive free total joint replacements for 40 volunteer orthopedic surgeons at 25 hospitals nationwide through Operation Walk USA. The program takes place each December as a humanitarian effort and allows for greater hospital, surgeon and medical staff participation.
Operation Walk USA began in 2010 following the tremendous success of Operation Walk, an international volunteer medical service organization that provides treatment for patients with arthritis and joint conditions in developing countries. To date, nearly 800 patients have received help through Operation Walk USA, with surgeries valued at more than $20 million.
